To assist the consistent interpretation of communications and requirement to take actions, a series of 29 typical HAIL enquiries were circulated to all maintenance Areas with a request that they indicate how these should be categorised and actioned. The consensus view is shown in the table below for reference and guidance. [Spellings corrected]

Caller claims the traffic lights at J14 M5 are faulty. They do not let the directions flow for an equal amount of time, when they clearly need to do so. They caused him to be late for work. Please call to advise.  Called customer and informed of reasons for the traffic light sequencing and apologized if they cause an inconvenience at all. Customer thanked for response.

PLEASE CALL THIS CUSTOMER BACK ASAP, HE IS VERY ANGRY AND THREATENING ALL SORTS OF THINGS WITH REGARD TO ME NOT BEING ABLE TO PUT HIM THROUGH DIRECTLY TO THE CLAIMS DEPT.  He would like to make a claim and requests (most seriously) a call back before 12pm today or he is taking further action. Please call him back ASAP and inform me when you do, many thanks.  Please see attached HAIL form which unfortunately does not contain any details of what Mr X was calling about. However, he called back (in response to a message left on his answerphone) and I have ascertained that he hit a pothole on the M25 (between J9 - 10 anticlockwise, inside lane). He said the pothole was square edged and looked like a failed earlier repair. He was concerned that it is a particular danger to motorcyclists. He also said that there appeared to be more potholes along this same stretch.

Caller was traveling along the M3 northbound, and near junction 6 at 21:15 last night, his car hit a road sign in the middle lane, and was badly damaged as a result. The sign was bent and twisted and was sticking up quite a long way, so his car was quite severely damaged. The caller would like to be advised as regards the claims process, and therefore can you contact him to discuss as well as sending him a DRF,

Caller complaining with regard to coned off area in the hardshoulder M1 J21, he believes this is for the permanent erection of speed cameras, is this correct and why is there a 40mph limit, is it only to catch people out?

The callers garden and garage was flooded. According to the caller flooding like this last occurred eight years ago, since then the problem was meant to have been solved. The caller would like to know if there are any plans to improve drainage on the A5, so that nearby homes aren't flooded again if there is heavy rain, that the drainage system on the A5 can't cope with.

Caller was a police woman who has a non-English speaking gentleman with her, who has had his car taken from him. He claims it was the police who did this, but they have denied it. She would like confirmation off the HA whether we have taken possession of it.

Caller knows that the M40 J1a will be closed to join the M25, 11/07/05  there are two contradicting signs on the sliproad; one reads closed, 21.00- 05.00 and the other sign for 22.00 -06.00.  I have contacted and spoke to Mr Long.  I informed him that the two with signs different times on are actually on different dates.  One closure is for Carillion's Principal Inspection of the overbridge and the other closure is for Area 5 Mouchel Parkman who will be installing loops in the carriageway.

The caller travels daily along the A45.west bound. He was ringing up to inform the HA that there is ragwort growing on both sides of the A45, and in the central reservation. It is along the stretch of road that is closest to Stretton on Dunsmore.

Matrix signs reading 2/3 closed 4 signs and then at Newport Pagnall they say end.  Rang control room who will inform police.

The caller was ringing about the matrix signs on the M1 which said that the three lanes had to go down to one lane. The caller was concerned because he felt as the traffic was obeying these signs an accident may be caused.  I rang through to the control room and was told that the police were already investigating to see if the signs were faulty.

Caller is wanting to report a large piece of wood on the M6, 2 miles before jct 13 on the north bound carriage way.  It is sat between the middle and fast lane.

The caller was ringing up to inform the HA that a substation, called Tunnel Interchange, will be closed down. The substation is situated at the junction of the M25 and the A2, junction 2.The substation will be switched off on Sunday 17th July, and it means that the traffic lights at this junction will not work as a result.

Caller works for X Shopping, a service off the A303 near Andover, Hampshire. He informed us that there used to be a Little Chef next door, but it has been closed and barriers have been put up, and he is concerned of possible accidents as the signs for the Little Chef have not been removed and cars turning in at high speed may crash . The caller is from BT. His manager rang up yesterday and spoke to someone called X in your team I believe. The caller is not very happy because he was promised a call back from X yesterday and he did not receive it. It is regarding access to a manhole cover that is on HA land, according to the caller. They need access to this manhole cover because they have to lay a cable. It is quite urgent that he is contacted. Please close this call. I have directed the caller to Herts CC as this comes under their responsibility

The caller would like to know how the UK road signs with aeroplanes on them fit in with EU policy. The caller said that the pictures of aeroplanes change depending on the direction of travel. For example if you are travelling straight on the picture of the aeroplane points up, but if you are turning left the picture of the aeroplane points to the left. The caller said that all signs with aeroplanes on in Europe look the same.  This call is not relevant to us. Please forward to DfT

Caller reported huge clumps of weeds, ragwort, and trapped litter on the island of junction 10 of the M6. He says the roads which approach it on the south side are also a mess.
